I checked my Farmer’s Almanac, the 2nd was the optimal time to weed to discourage pests and weeds. The 3rd was a new moon, which also is causing the lowest tides for the year. Next time there are lowest lows, I should go check out the local tide pools. I heard they are really worth seeing.
I did a bit of poking around on the internet, check out the links at the bottom of the post. The research on using moon signs, particularly for planting is inconclusive. But I did note:
“In 1995 Douglas Buhler and colleague Keith Kohler conducted experiments that showed weed seed exposure to light enhances germination for select species.
Kohler said their findings indicated that till soiling (which brings buried weed seeds to the surface) in complete darkness, such as that under a new moon, hinders the germination of certain weed seeds—resulting in fewer weeds in one’s garden.”
Hmm…interesting insight. I haven’t been trying to monitor the light/darkness to manage weeds. Primarily I try to attack the weeds in bloom before they go to seed and disperse even more seeds. I’m pretty sure having weeded while it was dry, followed by rain was beneficial.
